Panel: Tales of the Urban Wild
On the evening of Wednesday, February 26th, I’ll be moderating a panel at Woodland Park Zoo with the authors of the graphic novel, Tales of the Urban Wild: A Puma’s Journey, and Samantha Kreling, a PhD candidate at University of Washington whose research focuses on urban coyotes. The discussion will explore how we can use creative storytelling to enhance tolerance and compassion for carnivores and other wildlife (as well as our fellow humans!)
I am smitten with this strikingly illustrated novel written by Tiffany Yap, a senior scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity. Tiffany and Seattle-based artist and teacher, Meital Smith, weave together a rich blend of research, punchy prose, and striking visuals to transport readers into the treacherous world of pumas trying to navigate central California’s human-altered landscape. Their outstanding work highlights the diversity of people and our wild kin, all the while engaging readers in a gripping narrative that both educates and inspires.
During the panel, Tiffany and Meital will talk about their process for crafting the book, and will then join me in a casual conversation about the importance of the arts in wildlife advocacy. Later, Sam Kreling will tell us about the life of urban coyotes, and provide tips for coexisting with coyotes and other wildlife in Greater Seattle and beyond.
Please see the flyer below for details and an RSVP link. And if you’re interested in exploring a graphic novel project of your own, Tiffany and Meital will be hosting a workshop at BARN on Bainbridge Island. I hope you can join us!
