Grizzly Interview, KIRO-7 News

In the context of my role in carnivore conservation with Woodland Park Zoo, I recently interviewed with KIRO-7 News about grizzly bear recovery in the North Cascades. The interview is part of a longer segment that is well worth watching: the first 8 minutes show how the zoo’s animal care staff use clicker training to work with rescued brown bears Fern and Juniper. Think oversized Labrador retrievers being taught to sit and lie down and you’ll get the idea!

As we await the release of the draft Environmental Impact Statement that could set the stage for a regional grizzly bear reintroduction, I was excited to talk about the opportunity to complete the rewilding puzzle in the North Cascades: grizzlies are the last missing large mammal in perhaps my favorite place on Earth!

My interview begins approximately 10 minutes into the segment, which represents Season 4, Episode 2 of KIRO’s ongoing series, “A Look Inside Woodland Park Zoo.” The segment is titled “Northwest Neighbors”—and I hope we’ll be able to call wild grizzly bears our neighbors again soon!
