Essay in Upcoming Issue of Deep Wild

Deep Wild journal recently blogged an excerpt from my flash nonfiction essay, “Lessons in Survival,” to be published in print in June. I’m excited to be included in issue 4 of Deep Wild, whose “Writings from the Backcountry” are bound in a lightweight, compact package so that you can bring the journal with you to read on your own backcountry adventures. (The premiere issue, published in 2019, featured my personal essay about the joys and vulnerability of paddling the Upper Missouri River with a group of fellow conservationists.)

“Lessons in Survival” begins:

Nine knee-jarring miles from the North Cascades Highway, I try to picture a scenario that doesn’t end in disaster. ‘ONE at a TIME on BRIDGE,’ reads the foreboding sign. Although the letters are neatly carved, their subtext is much messier. You don’t want to lose everyone in your party.

You can continue reading the excerpt here, and please visit Deep Wild’s website to pre-order your copy of the upcoming issue. Happy trails!
